“Copperhead” movie premiere at the State Theater

19 June 2013 No Comment

Life in Culpeper has been enormously enriched since the May grand re-opening of the 1938 State Theater on Main Street- our crown jewel. This beautifully restored and enlarged facility seats 560, contains state-of-the-art technology and boasts one of the largest movie screens in the state. With 85% live programming; the State has hosted the likes of Bruce Hornsby and Lyle Lovett.

And now the State Theater is uniting the arts and history! Friday, June 28 at 7:30 p.m. Ron Maxwell’s new Civil War movie Copperhead will premiere here and Mr. Maxwell will be on hand to introduce the film and share filming details at a ticketed reception following the film. This movie has a limited initial release and will only be shown at five other theaters in Virginia, so Culpeper is the place to be in order to hear from the director opening night!

In addition, Copperhead will be shown again on Sunday, June 30 at 2:30 p.m., so out-of-town folks, make plans to head to Culpeper. TICKETS GO ON SALE TODAY AT 10 A.M.! Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a fantastic evening of entertainment, history, and the arts. Movie tickets cost $15 and the movie plus reception ticket costs $25. Purchase tickets on line or at the box office from 10-2 on weekdays or an hour before shows, or call 540-829-0293.

Copperhead focuses on the seldom told story of the persecution suffered by the large number of Northerners, dubbed Copperheads, who objected to the war. Based on the novel by Harold Frederic, who witnessed these conflicts firsthand as a small child, Copperhead tells the story of Abner Beech, a stubborn and righteous farmer of upstate New York, who defies his neighbors and his government in the bloody and contentious autumn of 1862. Unlike any Civil War movie to date, Copperhead reveals the war at home in a community driven to an appalling act of vengeance against a man who insists on exercising his right to free speech during wartime.

Thank you to the State Theater team for using this opportunity to focus on battlefield preservation, especially current fundraising efforts to preserve Fleetwood Hill, the core of the Brandy Station Battlefield. Regional preservation groups will have display tables in the lobby with items for sale and donations are always welcomed. Several Civil War authors will be signing books. So arrive early, bring your checkbooks and enjoy the camaraderie.

I’ll be at both screenings and look forward to seeing many of you!

Prayer Power

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the perseverance of the State Theater Board members who have given the life enriching gift of the arts to our community. Bless each member of the board and the outstanding theater staff as they carry out their mission. Thank you for Ron Maxwell’s integrity and his commitment to reveal historical truth that is often overlooked. May this film give us new understanding of Jesus’ words, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

I pray that you will give safe travel to all who are heading to Culpeper for this exciting premiere and time of fellowship and camaraderie.

In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen
