6000 Books Sold and Still Marching!
Marching Through Culpeper enters 7th printing
"The November 3rd Celebration Brunch of 5000 books sold was so successful we now have funds to continue marketing Marching Through Culpeper," chairperson Diane Logan told the "Fans of Marching Through Culpeper" at a luncheon held December 13, 2002 at the Lord Culpeper Hotel. "Because of the generous outpouring of support by sponsors we can now move forward to place the book in more libraries throughout the state and put it out on consignment in small shops. This book has the potential to have an enormous positive economic impact on Culpeper."
The enthusiasm of the "Fans of Marching Through Culpeper" was uncontainable as they voted to become a permanent organization. In addition, at least twenty new members showed up to join efforts to promote the book. "We are growing and we've only just begun," said Mrs. Logan. "A group of determined people can have an enormous impact."
Author Virginia Morton thanked the group for their support. "Because of the books sold through the brunch and the Christmas shopping season, I'm thrilled to announce today that sales have topped 6000 books and I will be picking up the 7th printing by the end of the year!" The crowd roared their approval of this phenomenal achievement by a first-time author.
Morton continued, "Promoting a book is a hard lonely job. Your support will be tremendously uplifting to me. Never underestimate the power of word-of-mouth publicity. People buy and read books on the recommendation of a friend more than for any other reason. Grassroots efforts are enormously successful. Each one of you can make a difference."
Morton went on to inspire the group by citing the following success stories:
Chicken Soup for the Soul was self-published but has spawned many spin offs that have sold multi millions.
The Red Tent, with promotion by a major publisher, only sold 11,000 copies as a hardback. However, when it was brought out as a trade paperback, sales skyrocketed and are now in the millions.
John Grisham sold his first book from the trunk of his car book by book. It worked and look at him now!
The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancey was finally published by The Naval Academy Press because a secretary kept recommending it. Jim Sutton, the man who made the decision to publish it and sold the movie rights, is Virginia Morton's agent.
"With your help, we will put Culpeper on the map and keep Marching Through Culpeper marching across the country," she concluded.
